Do you want to increase the number of followers of your twitter account ?
If your answer is NO then I wonder why on earth you are on Twitter. I personally have never found any Twitter user who don’t want to increase his followers. So for me it is pretty obvious that everybody who uses twitter want to increase his followers.
Why would you also want more followers on Twitter ?
There can be many reasons for a user to want many twitter followers. Some users might like to showcase their talents to many other users, some might just want to help others in a specific niche while some might just want to find new customers for their products or services.
Here are three most common and primary reasons of why users want more twitter followers.
More followers provide authority as an expert. The higher your follower count on twitter, the more people think of you as an expert or someone who is very interesting. Just like Real world, in Twitter also people think of users with very high number of followers more important then user with less followers.
More followers spread your Ideas You can use twitter to spread your ideas, your opinion on something important or anything that you want to share. If you have more followers then you have the ability to share your ideas with more people and can also get many responses to your idea.
More followers lead to more Customers. You can use twitter to sell your stuff. It can be your own product, a service or a brand. With More twitter followers you can market your product, generate more leads and ultimately you can find many customers.
So, Now the you know why you should have more Twitter followers. Here are my tips to get More twitter followers.
1. Create a follower goal
The first thing you need to do is to set your twitter followers goal. Take paper and pencil or notepad and write down how many followers you want in a year on twitter, now you should break it down by month, week and day…and then start working towards achieving these Goals.
Caution : Don’t get too carried away with these goals, work hard to achieve them but if you still get short of these goals, don’t get disappointed, work harder for the next week and improve yourself week by week.
2. Use a Relevant Profile & Cover Images
There are three main Images that you need to set on your twitter account: your profile, header and background image. If your profile is a personal one then make sure you use a High definition picture of yourself, in which you face is clearly visible on the profile image. If this profile is for your business or website then You can still use your HD Picture as profile image or you can use your company Logo also. For Header image you can show you company logo and name in this image and for background image I recommend you should show more details about your company like the service it provides and its achievement in it.
For Example : Look at the snapshot of MacDonald’s Twitter profile page below. As you can see, they have used their Logo as Profile image. As a Header image they have shown products that you can buy in MacDonald’s. Bothe the images are relevant to the brand and add value to their brand profile.
The most important thing here is that your twitter home page should look clean and attractive, even after changing all these images in your twitter account. All images should look clean and add value to your overall profile.
3. Have a Unique Effective and Relevant Twitter Bio
Your Twitter bio is a very short description (max 160 char) of who are you and what you do. If you created this account for your company then you should also write about what kind of services your company provide in your bio.
Also, your bio is displayed to every other Twitter Users whenever they come to your profile or See you in the list of followers of other Users. Leaving it blank or non-descriptive doesn’t encourage people to follow you.
4. Share valuable and interesting content consistently
No one follows a person who is not interesting and who doesn’t share anything which can be valuable for others. In Twitter world also You have to share interesting and valuable content to attract and impress your followers or potential followers, so that they will keep following your or follow you.
Here is how this will work for you. Whenever you share anything on Twitter, only your followers can see your tweet. But, if your tweet is interesting or compelling enough for any of your followers then he might retweet it. Now whenever your tweet gets retweet by any of your follower then your Tweet will be seen by all the followers of that User. Imagine if 10 of your followers retweeted your tweet then how much bigger audience you will get for your tweet (yes, It’s an amazing feeling…) and also you will get many potential followers among these new audience.
Retweets are like a reward for any user because it can help their tweets go viral like anything. But to get retweets or reply on your Tweet you need to find and share content that is useful, funny, humorous, interesting or beneficial for your followers. Make sure you’re tweeting on a variety of subjects and not just your personal thoughts or what you’re doing at the moment. This includes interesting links, videos, photos, podcast and retweets. Share these kind of high quality content consistently and you will see your followers list growing faster.
Most followers also check the duration between tweets and consistency of tweets from users they follow. If you tweet irregularly like sometimes 2 tweets a day or sometimes no tweets for the whole week or month then your followers might unfollow you. I suggest you should do a minimum of one or two tweets per day to retain your current followers and to make new followers.
Growing Twitter followers count is just like growing your blog. If you are providing value or giving something very useful to people from your blog then your readers wants to keep in touch with you always. They want to read about what you want to share with them and they will also be ready to share your idea with their friends, if you ask them to do this for you.
5. Do not Tweet Excessively, leave some space for engagement
As I told you in previous step that to get more followers, you need to tweet valuable content consistently. But you should not tweet too frequently. Because if you do this your followers might consider that you are spamming them and as a result they will unfollow you.
Another reason that you should not tweet too frequently is that you should give some room to your followers to engage and interact with you after your tweet. Too many tweets at a time will break that interaction between you and your followers before it even started. I suggest that you should do a single tweet on any topic at a time and then wait for sometime before you do another tweet, so that other users can interact with you.
6. Tweet with Opinions or Questions
Don’t be afraid to share your thoughts, opinions, ideas and share some interesting moments of your life on Twitter. I don’t recommend sharing a hourly report of what you are doing. But you can share your personal happenings, if it really worth sharing and you share it with a twist that shows people something unusual or interesting.
Another great way to increase your followers is to get people engaged into conversation, so that they’ll send you a tweet back. There’s no better way to get people to respond on your tweet than to post questions. Like you might have seen in Facebook quizzes that people are willing to respond to even the silliest of public opinion polls. So ask some interesting questions on Twitter and see if you can get people response.
Also, Don’t forget to engage with those who share your updates and those who respond to you. Reply them back, Thank them, answer their questions, and ask them why they like that tweet from you.
7. Tweets during Peak Hours
Every tweet counts. So to get maximum result from your tweet you should also consider the timing of your tweet. You should tweet at the time, when you can have the maximum active users on twitter so that they can read your tweet and if they find it interesting, they can either retweet it or reply on your tweet.
Ace blogger and power twitter user Neil showed in his post on The art of getting Retweets, that the ideal time to tweet to get more retweets is between 12AM to 2 PM EST on Friday (10:30 PM IST (Indian Standard Time) on Friday to 00:30 AM IST on Saturday) .
8. Engage more, Promote less
What do you feel When you see a user on twitter who always talk about himself or his products and never share anything valuable or interesting on Twitter.
Would you follow that kind of user?
Of course No, Nobody want to follow a self-bragging person who always tweets about check out my site, check out my store…”.
Many brands make the mistake of using Twitter as a promotional tool to constantly tweeting about their brand or website with the intention of getting more traffic. But if you do this, people will think of you that you are there just to talk about you and your brand, you don’t want to provide any value to the people who are following you. As a result they will unfollow you.
Always remember that the secret to building your follower list is interaction and engagement. Asking questions is perhaps the best way to get interaction on Twitter. You should also reply to other users questions and ideas as much as possible. People will share your tweets with their followers only if they think you care about them, and your tweet is relevant with their interest.
So, Always try to write engaging post on twitter, do interaction with your followers or even with the users you don’t know by using @name feature of twitter. If you do this you can also post promotional tweets for your blog or brand sometimes in between these engaging tweets.
You need to find a right balance between engaging tweets and promotional tweets . Neil from quicksprout.com suggests to follow 9/1 rule here. 9/1 rule says that you can tweet one promotional tweet after every 9 engaging tweets.
9. Know your audience
If you are using twitter to get more followers for your blog or more customers for your product then You need to target specific kind of audience as your potential followers on twitter. Here you can’t tweet about anything interesting you find on the internet.
You need to find out what will make your audience excited, which is also relevant to your niche. Do research on What problems they might face, their worries and their concerns that are related to your niche. If you provide your followers what they need then they will surely follow you or some of them will also buy your product.
10. Ask people to retweet you
I already told you that Retweets gives you more exposure as your tweet will be exposed to followers of your followers who retweeted your tweet. Simply adding “Please retweet” or “Please RT” in some of your posts (not all the time) can remind your followers that you want them to spread the word for you. According to an Online Survey “Please Retweet” has 51% retweet rate while “Please RT” has 39% and using neither of the two yields 12% retweet rate.
You should keep some extra space empty in your tweets, to leave room for your followers for RT, add @Username and a comment. I suggest you should use only 70 to 100 char long tweets to leave that room.
11. Retweet Others
It’s very simple rule that you have to give also if you want to receive something. Help others by retweeting or reply them on their posts and by linking out to their content. It sounds strange, but people really do remember when you help them out online. It strengthens your relationship with them, and it will also pay off when they click and retweet your links.
12. Follow people who follow people that are like you
You need to follow others on Twitter to start getting more followers on Twitter. But you shouldn’t follow anyone you find on Twitter.
So, who you should follow?
Follow people who have same interests as you. The reason you should follow them because these people are most likely to find your content and brand more relevant to them. These people are most likely to follow you back if you follow them.
Follow people in your industry and people who follow the people you follow. Some of these will follow you back. If they retweet you, it will introduce you to their followers.
Follow the top twitter users and closely watch what they tweet. Pay attention to the type of content they share and how they address their audiences.
Here one thing you should always remember that you shouldn’t follow hundreds of people before you start getting followers for yourself. If you follow more people than your followers count, people start to question your legitimacy. A good rule of thumb is to keep a 1:1 ration of following to followers.
13. Try to get famous people in your niche to follow you or RT on Twitter
To get attention of famous twitter users in your niche, mention a very high profile Twitter user using @username feature in your tweet. For example, Write a tweet in which you say something about a high profile user or give your honest views on a post of that user. Now when you do that there might be possibility that either that user himself or some of his followers will RT your tweet.
14. Tweet with Relevant Hashtags
This is very old twitter tip, but it still is very important to get more relevant followers. Hashtag are basically keywords starting with hash (#) sign. Hashtag in twitter represents a topic on which your tweet is about.
You can search for famous hashtags related to your topic on twitter. And after you found a famous hash tag then you can use that hash tag inside your tweet which will expose your tweet to all the users following that hash tag. You can also create your own hash tag by prefixing hash (#) sign before your keyword.
15. Repeat your most popular tweets
Do a search for your Twitter name and observe which of your updates get the most replies or retweets using Twitter analytics. You can repeat these of yours popular tweets after some duration. I suggest repeat them after every 8 to 10 other tweets of yours. Because It might be possible that some users who didn’t got your update the last time you posted the same post, will get your update this time. Some of them might also follow you if they finds your tweet valuable for them.
16. Add “Follow me on Twitter” links on your blog, e-mail, other social networking profiles, pages, and across the web.
Attach your Twitter URL on your Facebook profile/page, Google+ Profile/Page, LinkedIn Profile, business cards, email signatures, your blogs and websites. Also, Add Twitter link to your About and Contact Pages of your blog. That way, people who are already interested in what you’re doing and find you on any of your Social networking profile other then Twitter, can easily find your Twitter Profile and follow you. Using graphics, such as a twitter button or followers counter can also be more effective at catching attention and getting you more followers.
Bring out your twitter account into the physical world. Always Look for the opportunity to display your Twitter link like every time you write new post, share podcast, give presentations and speak on conferences.
17. Regularly unfollow people who haven’t followed you back
This is especially important to avoid follow limits. The first limit you’ll probably hit is when you’ve followed 2,000 people. You won’t be able to follow any more until you have 2,000 user following you. There are services like justunfollow which can help you unfollow these people.
18. Send “@Messages” to Top Users
One good way to get noticed is to send something called an “@message” to top Twitter users. Here’s how it works. If you and your friend both have Twitter accounts and you both follow each other, you can send direct messages to each other that aren’t for public consumption. But you can also send “@messages” to anyone you want, whether you follow them or not, or they follow you or not. Got that? Here’s where it gets good — an “@message” is posted on your profile page for all to see.
For example, if you wanted to send an “@message” to top Twitter user singer Shakira, anybody visiting your profile would see it. So, Good luck getting Shakira to send a tweet back to you, but that’s not the point. But if she does feel the urge to re-tweet your message — or broadcast it to all his followers — 21.9 million people will see it (as of August 30, 2013).
19. Guest post
Yes, you can get more twitter followers simply by writing content for other blogs. Depending on the traffic of that blog, you can get from 10 to 100 new followers from just one post. Just don’t forget to add your Twitter profile link in your author bio.
20. Find and Follow
This tactic involves searching for a topic on Twitter that is relevant to what you do, and then following 100 people who’ve interacted with that topic. You can repeat this process endlessly, removing those who don’t follow you back.
21. Use Web tools
You can also use web tools to help you find followers. Here in this post you will find tools which are good to find new followers.
22. Go where you find Like-Minded People
What I mean by this is you need to attend conferences, events, seminars and local tweetups. You’ll meet people at these events and if you bond with them, you’ve likely got some new followers who may eventually recommend you to their audiences.
Apart from just following people who tweet about similar topics you should also interact with those members through direct tweets. You can also send direct-messages to some of them if you have already created a good bond with them. But you need to do more than that to make strong bonding with them.
Make sure you add your location to your profile. Now you need to do twitter networking offline by interacting with people who are also on Twitter in your city and share similar interests. For example, If you love learning and talking about anything blogging and marketing related and if you notice that certain people are sharing great blogging and marketing tips on twitter, not only should you follow them, but you should also direct-message them asking to grab a coffee or drink with you.
24. Don’t use an auto-responder
Don’t use any tool to auto-respond like thank everyone who followed you, Retweet you or Favorite your Tweet. It might be irritating for your followers and as a result of this they might unfollow you also.
25. Just do What you feel like Doing
Don’t worry too much about how you should tweet so that you will get more followers. Just be natural and tweet form the heart. Don’t just try to imitate Power users to get more twitter followers instead learn from them. Also, Find your own ways to connect genuinely with your followers you already have, help them in solving their problems, ask legitimate questions to power users you follow, and the rest will be taken care of automatically.
Some Other useful Twitter tips
Make an effort to Keep Your Followers on Twitter. People who actually keep up with the tweets of the people they follow will regularly re-evaluate who they follow and will unfollow whoever they feel is not worth following anymore.
Share quotes – Most People love witty or inspirational quotes and like to RT them. What’s nice about quotes is that you don’t have to create them up. Somebody has already done that work for you.
Do not send automatic direct messages to users you don’t know personally or never communicated with as that may result in unfollows.
Do not Follow/Unfollow people too frequently. Twitter has a system that detects quick and massive follows and unfollows. If this system catches you, you may have your tweets stricken from the Twitter search engine.
